Hong Kong: PolyU’s AI Innovation Advances Sustainable Fashion

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has launched a major research initiative in sustainable fashion design and brand ecosystem management. The project, From Tradition to Tech: Sustainable Fashion Design and Brand Management in the AI Era, highlights the University’s push to integrate advanced technologies into traditional industries. Led by the School of Fashion and Textiles with support from the Industrial Centre, it aims to boost competitiveness and sustainability.

The donation was marked by a kick-off ceremony on the PolyU campus, attended by senior university leaders, representatives and other distinguished guests. The event highlighted the long-standing partnership, a collaboration that has spanned more than four decades and has consistently advanced innovation in fashion and textiles.

To commemorate the occasion, the University presented a specially designed souvenir that used weaving techniques to depict its iconic architecture, underscoring the link between tradition, innovation, and gratitude.

The research initiative comes at a time when Hong Kong is prioritising reindustrialisation and smart city development, with artificial intelligence (AI) positioned as a core enabler. By combining AI with other emerging technologies such as blockchain, cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT), the project aims to generate fresh opportunities for innovation across the fashion value chain.

The goal is to develop practical solutions that will enable enterprises to optimise their operations, strengthen supply chain resilience, and deliver new experiences for consumers while embracing sustainability.

The fashion industry is undergoing significant transformation as digitalisation reshapes how products are designed, manufactured, distributed, and consumed. AI-driven tools are now central to this shift, offering applications in predictive design, customer engagement, and intellectual property protection.

PolyU’s new research project seeks to place Hong Kong at the forefront of these developments by accelerating the use of intelligent systems in fashion design and production. By equipping future talent with advanced industry knowledge, the University aims to strengthen the region’s standing in the Greater Bay Area as a hub for fashion innovation.

The project is structured around seven key research areas that blend technology with sustainability. The first focus is on intelligent data-driven design and digital transformation, where AI will be used to analyse data for new design possibilities while streamlining production processes.

Another area targets AI applications in safeguarding creative assets and revolutionising apparel review, ensuring intellectual property is protected while designs are evaluated with greater efficiency. Material innovation is also a priority, with simulations and optimisation systems set to improve apparel quality and reduce waste.

Cost management and efficiency are addressed through systems for robust estimation of product budgets and mining of production data, enabling enterprises to make informed decisions. In addition, supply chain management is a core theme, with the project studying collaborative mechanisms across multi-role suppliers to enhance competitive advantage.

The digital marketplace is another dimension of the research, with critical analysis of online consumer reviews offering insights into how digital transformation can be leveraged to influence purchasing behaviours. Finally, the initiative will explore AI-based optimisation strategies for live commerce, an area of rapid growth where real-time consumer engagement can reshape how fashion is marketed and sold.

PolyU positions this project as an opportunity to fuse heritage with technology. By drawing from traditional design principles while embedding digital innovation, the University is seeking to create a model for sustainable fashion that can be replicated across the industry.

This approach not only benefits enterprises but also nurtures the next generation of talent, who will be trained in both creativity and advanced technological applications. The collaboration highlights how industry and academia can align to push forward sustainable practices, strengthen competitiveness, and prepare the fashion sector for the digital age.
